A Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) takes care of animals that come into the facility and maintains the facility itself. A minimum of 2 years of schooling and gaining an Associates of Science with a focus in Veterinary Technology and then passing the national boards exam (VTNE) is required to be an RVT.

A Veterinary Technician may have the following responsibilities:
*Everything an assistant does, plus*
•Providing general nursing care
•Examining animals and checking vitals in preparation for the Veterinarian
•Taking X-rays of animals
•Administering first aid for emergencies
•Administering medication and treatments
•Drawing blood samples for testing
•Monitoring animals under anesthesia

Veterinary Assistants complete many organizational, medical and customer service tasks to provide the most comprehensive care they can.

Their duties and responsibilities include:
•Check in patients and request information from the owners, including vaccination records or the reason for the visit
•Clean, disinfect and prepare medical equipment between each appointment
•Administer vaccinations
•Administer medications and/or anesthesia to prepare animal patients for surgery
•Monitor and track vitals following surgery
•Calm, comfort and properly handle animals before, during and after procedures
•Take notes on examination results and updating records
•Feed, bathe and exercise animals during their visit
•Provide owners educational resources and information on how best to care for animals in general, for specific conditions and after various procedures
